Flu... the three letter word...

Flu... the three letter word that strikes fear and terror into the hearts of man...

Or it should... You might have noticed the lack of activity around here, well it all started with a little twinge in my eye then a little gritty feeling then a few hours later I was blinking fast to keep the excess water from spilling out. My nose also started to run. I thought uh oh a cold is coming on. I took the usual items to combat it (in my case vitamin C, sulfur pills, and a few other natural products) and I felt better the next day. Then later that afternoon I had another bout of watery eyes and runny nose. Took them again and the next day I felt fine. I thought I had throw it off. Well little did I know how wrong I was.

This bug put me into a false sense of security and two days later it hit full force. I woke up feeling like a Mack truck hit me head on. Watery eyes, full sinuses, headache, fever, massive chills, and in general feeling like something ran over me. Don't get me wrong I have had flus before, quite a few in fact, but nothing to this level in a long long time. Temperature went up and down. First couple of days wasn't too bad, then it shot up to 103F. I managed to keep it from going any higher but it was a struggle and took several medications to do it. That was the peak thankfully, but it was still high for the next week. And the fever did not fully depart for another week after. Yes you read right, two weeks I felt miserable and got absolutely nothing done. Although I did watch a couple of things on Netflix, not sure if I remember what they were.

And dreams! Oh my word the dreams I was having (when I actually did manage to sleep). I have had weird ones in the past, but these were on a whole new level. You know the normal dream where you end up at a board meeting in your underwear but not sure why? And of course they bring this to your attention making you want to fall into a crack in the earth never to be seen again. Well not me, oh no, I was the only one dressed! Never mind it was "underwear day" (which could never happen), nope they all had to ask why I wasn't in my underwear and make jokes giving the same feeling of wanting to fall into the earth times 10.

You know there are all kinds of Flu. Horse flu, dog flu, swine flu, bird flu. But I still think the old fashioned "sneak up on you no name flu" is the worst. You think you are going to be okay, just a case of the sniffles or a minor cold. Then whamo you feel like a 40 ton mack truck hit you, stopped and backed up over you, then went froward again. All you want to do is hide under the covers sleep until it passes. But wait, you can't because you can't breathe. But even if you could breathe, the cough would wake you up. Sometimes you wonder if a lung is going to come up your throat, or something ... else.

So you drag your sick backside into the doctor and what does he tell you? Go rest and drink lots of fluids. Well I knew that but can't you give me something for this? Nope sorry it has to run its course. No cure for the flu.

HA! he has something that would help but doesn't want to give it. Well I can understand that, we don't want to make super bugs that antibiotics won't work on. But gosh darn at that point I didn't care. I wanted DRUGS! The GOOD stuff! Instead I end up getting something from the local pharmacy that could substitute for water that cost over $13. Although I admit it does taste better than water. Does it help? Well maybe, on a good day. But we all know this is one baaaad day.

I try to read, my favorite pass time, but of course my vision is so blurry it gives me a instant headache to try. So I lay back and do the only thing I can do that does not hurt ... moan.

This my friends is why there have been so many movies with people moaning in hospitals. Heck I am almost sure it is why we always see zombies moaning. They probably have the flu as well.

They tell you the best thing for the flu is sleep. And I agree 100% the problem is HOW to get said sleep when you can't breathe and you are coughing ever minute or two. They never tell you that part.

Then you realize you are almost out of everything in the house, including ...wait for it ... TISSUES! It is crisis time! So you drag yourself out of your sick bed, into the store. Everyone looks at you as though you are a leaper or Patient Zero of the deadly plague where if they are in the same building as you they will die a horrible death. Meanwhile you strongly consider coughing directly on that one cashier that wouldn't take your double coupon last week. Of course you already are without intending to, but that is beside the point.

You blink through watery eyes trying to get home and right now your bed looks like heaven. But when get there you realize you haven't yet put away the groceries. You look over the bags of potato chips, pretzles, and crackers to see that nothing needs to go into the refrigerator anyway. You grab a bag of 'flu food' since nothing else even remotely tastes good though all the mucus your body is putting out and you have to eat something lest your stomach decides to join the choir of symptoms, and drag yourself back to your sick bed.

There you remain until many days later you emerge, better but still feeling like a giant truck used you for a hood ornament right before plowing though several concrete barricades. You are on the mend and life starts to look like it is worth living after all.

That my readers, is where I was. But as Buddy said so eloquently on the 80's TV show Night Court "But I am feeling much better now."

Even Santa Has Problems

Those pesky elves persuaded Santa to modernize this year and try out the new SH9000.  They promised all the butterfinger bugs were out of this Santa Helper.  But as you can see from the photo taken from a motion activated camera, not everything went as planned.  Looks like it is back to the drawing board!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Time Rock is Released!

I am pleased to announce that Time Rock is finally released!  It is currently available at Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Smashwords, iBooks, Scribd, and Overdrive.

Excerpt 1:

"Keleeigan!"  Trisia shouted as she fell backward, pulled herself up, and fought to stay on her feet.  "This is insane!  Can you do anything?"

"No!  When I shoved us out last time we landed with enough force to rubber-band back into the warp, which I didn't think was possible.  Just hang on.  It should be all over in a minute, one way or the other."  He said as the lighthouse shook and jerked this way and that.

"Professor when you say 'come on over for a wild time' you sure don't kid around," Kim said.

Keleeigan looked towards him.  "I never said that!"

Kim smiled.  "Well you should have!"

 Excerpt 2:
After a bit manhandling by the guards, James finally arrived at the center chamber of a large temple.  In the middle of the large expanse a throne was placed and King Khafre sat upon it.  "When I was told one of my nobles was visiting Giza, I became suspicious.  Especially when it did not sound like anyone I knew.  And now that I see you, I can say I do not know you.  Who are you?  And how dare you make false claims to be a noble of mine!"

"This has all been a misunderstanding.  I never said I was one of your nobles."

"Then why do you wear the shendyt and cape of one!"

"I--"

"He is a thief!"  A priest from the right side of Khafre stepped forward.  "I know that cape!  It is Manakhtuf's!"

Khafre leaned forward and turned to face the man.  "Ankef, are you sure?"

Ankef lowered his eyes.  "There can be no mistake my king, the cape was made special for him and sealed in his tomb.  I should know, I was the one that sealed it!"

Khafre's eyes flared.  "Tomb raider!  There is nothing worse than to steal from the dead and deny them pleasures in the afterlife!  You shall die by morning in the way we punish all those that disturb the dead!  Take him away and return Manakhtuf's cape to his tomb where he can make use of it!"

Ankef bowed.  "Of course my king."  He then walked over to James and removed the cape from James' shoulders then spit in his face.  "May the gods show you no mercy.  I can assure you we won't."  Several men marched forward grabbed James and moved him forcefully out of the temple.

A New Nook: Glowlight Plus

You may have heard that there is a new e-ink reader out by Barnes and Noble: the Glowlight Plus.  While I spoke of this earlier, when the new nook tablet was released I thought that was it.  Even with the information we had at hand, I didn't think another e-ink reader was going to be released.  I am glad to be wrong in this case.

It is the first reader by B&N to be fully waterproof.  You can take the device into the shower or beach without worry.  While the software is a little lacking compared to previous devices, and it does not have a micro SD card slot (a deal breaker for me as 3.2gb internal is too small) it is a decent device.  One very redeeming quality: it is fairly easy to install your own android apps.  Not as easy as you would want, but if you know your way around the Android adb command line interface (also called Android Desktop/Studio or Android Debug Bridge) you can install any apps you like. The Glowlight Plus has Android 4.4 so most anything should run.  Although I wouldn't suggest graphic intensive games.  But alternate readers, file mangers, launchers, etc should be fine.

The USB Debugging menu (needed for this procedure) is there, if a bit hidden.  First you open the settings menu and on the second page you open the "Software" menu.  Tap the "Software Version" option three times.  Scroll down the screen until you see the option for "Development Options"  tap that and when you get a menu for "USB debugging" check that to turn it on.  Then you connect the Nook via USB, fire up ADB on your desktop, and you are off and running.  The command line interface (CLI) is a bit harder than point and click, but all the instructions come with the program.  Essentially all you need to do is have the app files (apk) in the same folder as ADB and you install it by typing in the command window adb install nameofpackage.apk.  It is not as hard as it looks.  But if you need help head on over to XDA Forums for more details.  I haven't done this specifically with the Glowlight Plus, but I have with other Android devices.  As I said, it sounds a lot harder than it is.

While I see this as a good sign, and I hope the Nook continues.  I have strong doubts that the platform will last much longer if it does not sell well this Christmas season

Dropping the Ball

Dropping the ball, I admit, I did it. What is dropping the ball? Well it depends on your point of view but in general, when one drops the ball they usually have failed to so something they planned. It goes back to the days of jugglers and you want to keep all these balls in the air. It is difficult to say the least. And if you drop one, well something didn't get done. Or you didn't do something properly.

What did I drop? Time Rock for one. I wanted to have it out by the end of September and here is November and I still do not have it out. Oh sure I could have released it, but I kept finding errors or little glitches here and there. Just enough that I would postpone the release date, and keep working on it. I want to give you, my readers, the best possible product, but to that end has resulted in delays.

I also found a few grammatical errors in my previous books, and I am working on fixing and re-releasing.

Another ball I dropped: this blog. I have quite a few posts planned but not finished. However, they will be out shortly.

Of course another aspect is other writing projects, not to mention taking a writing course from the University of Iowa. So as you can see a lot of juggling going on and sadly I dropped the ball. It didn't break and Time Rock will be released soon but argggggh a little later than I planned. And if you are wondering no, sadly, I am not doing NaNoWriMo this year. I really wanted to, but with so many irons (or balls in this case) I just do not have the time.

So again, Time Rock will be out SOON and in time for Christmas. I promise. Watch this space for updates.

Oyster closed its shell today

UPDATE: CEO of Smashwords Mark Coker  has confirmed that Oyster was bought by Google and that the shutdown won't be fast.  The service will continue to run until early 2016, no exact date has been determined as of yet.

Oyster the service that was poised to be the pearl of the eBook subscription model (all the books you want for $9.95 a month) closed its shell today.  I wrote about then shortly after they opened.  At the time they were the first on the scene, with Scribd right behind them.  While they only supported iOS I figured it was only a matter of time before that was expanded (support for Android was added, eventually).  Scribd by contrast had support for iOS and Android at the start.

This announcement comes only a few months after Scribd ran into problems and had to scale back its catalogue of romance titles or risk going out of business.

It is very difficult to balance giving a all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of books to the customer, while not loosing your shirt in the process.  But this closure signals a possible end to the subscription model, or at the very least hands it over to Amazon.  They are the only company left in good financial standing that can  weather out this unknown business model with ease.

Details are vague as to what exactly happened at Oyster.  There are rumors they were purchased, and are being quietly shut down as a result.  Re/code says most of the team is transferring to Google.  And while Google is not saying they purchased the company, but rather is paying for the right to hire some of its staff.  But at 17 million, that is a high price to pay unless you have some big plans for the team.  I am guessing, and it is only a guess, that you will see some sort of monthly subscription plan show up on Google Books in the near future.

I Try My Best Not To Have This Happen To Red

I try my best not to have this happen to Red.
